Abstract
Haemophilus influenzae, one of normal flora of upper respiratory tract, can cause various kinds of invasive and noninvasive infections. The vast majority of strains from invasive infections has been associated with genital infections, neonatal
sepsis,
septic arthritis, cellulitis, pneumonia, pericarditis and epiglottitis. Recently, we experience two cases of cellulitis with bacteremia due to H. influenzae. The first case was 9-month-old male child who was hospitalized because of fever and
erythematous swelling of right cheek. In the cultures of throat and blood, H. influenzae biotype II was identified. After treatment with cefuroxime and gentamicin, above symptoms improved. The second case was 28-month-old female child who was
hospitalized because of fever, both conjunctival hemorrhage and swelling of eyelids. In the cultures of conjunctiva and blood, H. influenzae biotype ¥³was identified. Following cephaloridine and gentamioin therapy, the swelling of eyelids
improved.
We
report two cases of cellulitis with bacteremia caused by H. influenzae biotype II and ¥³, with a review of literatures.
